SandFest gives back to community

Nonprofits profit from last year’s SandFest

The Texas SandFest 2016 board held a Sponsor Recognition, Volunteer Thank You and Big Check party on Thursday, May 19, at La Barataria Restaurant.

“Thanks to the generous financial support of numerous sponsors combined with the dedication of over 200 volunteers, thousands of visitors were welcomed to the beach of Port Aransas for the 20th annual Texas SandFest,” said Lisa Shelton, event coordinator.

“The mission of SandFest is to give back to the community and we were certainly able to do that this year,” said Scott Tanzer, treasurer.

More than $130,000 was given to area non-profit organizations at the event. Over the past five years, a total of $385,000 has been given back to Port Aransas and other Coastal Bend charities to help them continue their work.

Organizations that received checks at the party were Texas State Aquarium, $5,000; Port Aransas High School graduating seniors’ scholarships, $30,000; Port Aransas Community Theatre, $27,000; Port Aransas Rotary Club, $5,000; Port Aransas Police Foundation, $3,000; Keep Port Aransas Beautiful, $5,000; Helping Hands Food Pantry, $27,000; Port Aransas Art Center, $27,000 and Bikers Against Child Abuse, $1,000.
