Beach rules help folks stay safe and have fun

Residents and visitors look forward to SandFest, but there are rules and a few precautions to make to be sure everyone stays safe on the beach during the event.

While golf carts (not ATVs) are allowed on the beach, they may not be taken into the event area. Only official SandFest event staff golf carts with special permits are allowed inside the festival.

As for legal matters, remember that the speed limit on the beach is 15 mph, whether in a golf cart or a vehicle. Offenders could be fined up to $500.

Beachgoers also should keep in mind that glass is not permitted on the beach.

A parking permit is required to park on the city’s beach. Permits may be purchased from vendors on the beach, the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce ad Tourist Bureau or at any Stripes convenience store on the island. No permit is required between mile markers 52 and 58 or at I.B. Magee Jr. Beach Park, a county park within the Port Aransas city limits.

Parking is not permitted within 300 feet of any beach entrance or along the sand dunes. Vehicles are not allowed on the surf side of the wood posts (they’re called bollards) that line much of the beach. A city ordinance prohibits vehicles from parking or traveling within 50 feet of the water’s edge.

Dogs on leashes (as required by city ordinance) are welcome at SandFest, but owners must pick up after their pets.
