Walter McDonald

South Padre Island

At 73, Walter “Amazin’ Walter” McDonald may be the oldest sand sculptor in “captivity.”

“Sand has taken over my life,” he says.

McDonald has carved sand since 1986, and it has taken him to China, Japan, Belgium, Holland, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Nassau, Costa Rica, Qatar and many other cities in the U.S.

In 2012, he won the “best architecture” award at the Tournament of Champions in Federal Way, Washington, the Peoples Choice award at South Padre Island Sand Castle Days, and first place, peoples choice and sculptors choice with John Gowdy at the American Championship of Sand Sculpture Duo Category in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

With his experience as a professional photographer, his access to sand sculpture events and the advent of the Internet, he is able to share his collection of photos of his own and others’ work that can be viewed at amazinwalter@flickr.com and http://amazinwalter.com and WalterMcDonald@facebook.

McDonald has been teaching people to play in the sand since 1978. “Lessons are the future of sand sculpting,” he says. On South Padre Island, which he has called home since 1982, he has taught hundreds if not thousands of people how to build a sand castle.
